Back in 2003, the UKTI Healthcare Team in Japan introduced a training programme to Japan called Major Incident Medical Management and Support (MIMMS). It was first introduced as UKTI trade promotion activity with focus on UK Accident and Emergency related products and services in order to raise profile of UK expertise in this area.
This training programme is aimed at doctors, nurses and paramedics and is especially relevant in a country lying in an earthquake zone.
The training is run by the Manchester-based charity Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) (www.alsg.org), "a charity dedicated to preserving life by providing training". In 2004, 7 medical doctors were certified as MIMMS instructors in Japan. It's testament to the value of this training that now more than 670 people have completed the course in Japan and 21 certified instructors are activity promoting the training programme in Japan.
UKTI supports this training annually through the provision of Embassy premises on the weekend . On Sunday 4 July, on the final day of the course, 24 trainees and 12 instructors ran a practical training exercise on the Embassy compound in Tokyo, based on learning how to handle a hypothetical major incident.
We are very grateful to the MIMMS instructors who voluntarily, enthusiastically and continuously promote this training course in Japan by giving up their leave. It is our great pleasure to play a part in this worthwhile event.
