Down to Business in Buenos Aires

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Export
Flew in to Buenos Aires with huge views of River Plate and a sense of Spring. We are going in to winter in UK and it is a delight to experience the joy of new growth and Spring sunshine. Two hours sleep on plane is going to make it a tough day with an 11pm finish

Buenos Aires is different from Santiago and Lima. It is more European, older, more fashionable, less ordered. Old links to the UK to build upon (British schools, a Welsh speaking community in Patagonia, an identification of Britain with quality and efficiency - and it's expensive!)

I gave a speech and took questions in a session with Chamber of Commerce. The business linkages to Britain are all there. The challenge is to convert these links to profitable business. I also had a session with 11 Chambers of Commerce from Latin America which were meeting in Buenos Aires. The commitment to the UK is valuable. It is a challenge for UKTI staff around the world how best to encourage companies to internationalise and how best to utilise the expertise of British Business Chambers.

I visited a small Argentinean company, Three Melons, which makes computer games for the internet and after 5 years, now has 45 employees. They have real talent and potential. They are at the point of transforming from a group of friends with a business idea to a well structured company. And they want to expand overseas. Will it be to the UK? The team here have done a fabulous job making the right contacts and offering help.

Dinner was a wonderful group of designers, cultural bureaucrats and creatives - many of whom had visited the London Design Festival and all of whom recognised the power of British creative industries. Well done to the team for organising it.

The last leg begins. This is when fatigue washes over. But the programme is exciting for Friday, starting with a business breakfast at the Embassy, an interview with the daily newspaper, La Nación and I'm especially looking forward to my visit to Freddo's Icecream, who have just opened a parlour in London.
